Reads & options

  • 1. If the flare screen is switched, the screener can slip to the rim immediately for a quick post-up on the smaller defender.
  • 2. If the shooter's defender fights over the flare, curl into the paint for a short pull-up instead of staying out on the arc.
  • 3. Use the same alignment with a different player flaring each time out to keep the defense from anticipating who gets the shot.

Coaching points

  • · The flare screen has to be set at an angle, not flat, so the shooter's cut actually bends away from the defender's recovery path.
  • · The inbounder should throw the pass the instant the shooter clears the screen — a late pass gives the defense time to recover.
  • · Whoever isn't involved in the action should stay spaced away from the ball so the catch-and-shoot lane stays open.
