Which basketball coaching certification do you actually need?

"Basketball coaching certification" covers three different things, and coaches routinely buy the wrong one. It's worth separating them before you spend anything.

  • League-mandated credentials. Whatever the organization you coach for names by title — often a recognised national or provincial coaching program, plus background screening and a concussion or safety module. These are non-negotiable where they apply, and nothing else substitutes for them. In Canada that conversation usually starts with the National Coaching Certification Program.
  • Screening and safety clearances. Background checks, vulnerable-sector screening, concussion protocols. Frequently required even where no coaching certification is, and handled through the league rather than bought online.
  • Skills and knowledge courses. Training in how to actually coach — practice design, teaching progressions, game management. This is the category the SixSevenBall certification belongs to. It demonstrates knowledge; it is not a credential any league recognises by name, and we'd rather say that plainly than have you find out after paying.

Requirements vary by organization, change between seasons, and differ across provinces and states — so confirm with the specific league, board, or association you'll be coaching for rather than relying on any third-party summary, this page included.     Develops coaches' ability to teach in-game decision-making and to manage games effectively through adjustments, timeouts, substitutions, and late-game situations.

    Running Tryouts & Building a Roster

    Covers how to design fair, informative tryouts, evaluate players consistently, and communicate roster decisions professionally.
