The breakdown

Reads & options

  1. 1.If the zone overplays the skip pass, hit the top player for a middle catch and immediate re-reversal back the other way.
  2. 2.The relocating post can seal for a direct entry pass instead of just filling the gap if his defender loses track of him.
  3. 3.Attack the short corner on the ball side once the zone has shifted fully, since that's usually the biggest gap after a skip.

Coaching points

  • The pass has to beat the zone's shift — reverse the ball with one or two passes, not a slow, telegraphed swing.
  • The relocating post should read the zone's shift and move into the open gap, not a fixed spot regardless of coverage.
  • Shooters catching the skip pass need their feet set before the catch, since there won't be time to gather afterward.
