Action — Overload the Strong Side

Reads & options

  • 1. Once the zone overloads to the strong side, the skip pass to O4 on the weak side is often the first read for an open catch-and-shoot.
  • 2. O5 flashing into the vacated high-post gap behind the shifting zone is the second read if the skip isn't there.
  • 3. Reset and overload the other side if the defense matches the numbers cleanly the first time.

Coaching points

  • · Overloading only works if the weak side stays spaced and ready to catch a skip pass — if the weak-side players drift in, there's nothing to attack when the zone shifts.
  • · The skip pass has to be quick and on target, since it's the pass most zones are slowest to rotate to.
  • · Attacking the same overload every time makes it scoutable — mix which side you overload possession to possession.
