The breakdown

Reads & options

  1. 1.If the zone rotates an extra defender to the overload side, immediately swing the ball back to the weak-side corner for the open look.
  2. 2.The overloading wing can cut to the short corner instead of the wing spot if that gap is more open once the ball arrives.
  3. 3.Run the overload to either side depending on where your best shooter is spaced.

Coaching points

  • The overload only works if the third player actually relocates with purpose — a slow drift gives the zone time to rotate and cover both.
  • Reverse the pass through the point guard, not directly across the zone, so the ball moves faster than the defenders can slide.
  • Once overloaded, attack immediately — holding the ball gives the zone time to recover its shape.
