Reads & options

  • 1. If the zone rotates an extra defender to the overload side, immediately swing the ball back to the weak-side corner for the open look.
  • 2. The overloading wing can cut to the short corner instead of the wing spot if that gap is more open once the ball arrives.
  • 3. Run the overload to either side depending on where your best shooter is spaced.

Coaching points

  • · The overload only works if the third player actually relocates with purpose — a slow drift gives the zone time to rotate and cover both.
  • · Reverse the pass through the point guard, not directly across the zone, so the ball moves faster than the defenders can slide.
  • · Once overloaded, attack immediately — holding the ball gives the zone time to recover its shape.
