Away Series — Wing Isolation

A clear-out set that uses an 'away' screen on the weak side to pull a defender out of the isolation player's driving lane, isolating your best wing scorer one-on-one with the floor spaced.

Reads & options

  • 1. If the isolation defender gets help from the weak side, the cleared-out player should immediately relocate to the corner for the kick-out.
  • 2. The screener can slip to the rim after the away screen if his own defender switches to help early.
  • 3. Run the same clear-out to either wing depending on which side your best scorer is being guarded on.

Coaching points

  • · The away screen has to actually occupy a defender who could otherwise help — screen the player closest to the driving lane, not just anyone.
  • · Everyone not involved in the action should hold their spacing wide and deep, since a crowded floor kills the isolation.
  • · Give the isolation player a clear read on the shot clock — this is a one-pass, attack-immediately action, not a slow-developing set.
