Basketball Devotions for Youth Teams
Short enough for a water break. Specific enough to stick. Each devotion connects one character theme to something the team just did on the court.

How to lead a five-minute devotion
- Bring the team to half-court and have everyone sit — it signals a change of pace.
- Read the verse (in your church's translation).
- Say the big idea in one sentence.
- Ask one question and let the kids answer. Don't fill the silence too fast.
- Connect it to the next drill: 'Let's see that in this next drill.'
Eight devotions
Belonging
Every player on this team matters — the team isn't whole without you.
- What's one thing a teammate did today that helped the team?
- Why does a team need more than one kind of player?
- Who could you make feel welcome this week?
Prayer: Thank God for each new face on the team.
Effort
Give your full effort to whatever you're doing, even when nobody's keeping score.
- When was it hardest to give full effort today?
- What's the difference between effort and talent?
- Where else in your week could you work with all your heart?
Prayer: Ask for strength to give our best at school, at home, and on the court.
Perseverance
Keep going when it's hard — the payoff comes to people who don't quit.
- What's a skill you couldn't do at first but can now?
- What do you tell yourself when you miss five shots in a row?
- Who in your life is a good example of not giving up?
Prayer: Pray for anyone on the team going through something hard right now.
Humility
Great teammates look out for others, not just themselves.
- What does an unselfish play look like?
- How did someone make you look good today?
- How can you put a teammate first this week?
Prayer: Ask for hearts that think about others first.
Self-control
Being strong includes controlling your temper, your words, and your reactions.
- What do you do when a call doesn't go your way?
- What helps you calm down when you're frustrated?
- Why is self-control a kind of strength?
Prayer: Ask for patience and calm in the moments that frustrate us.
Courage
You don't have to feel fearless to be brave — courage is doing the right thing anyway.
- What took courage on the court today?
- When is it hard to be brave at school?
- How can you stand up for someone this week?
Prayer: Pray for courage in whatever feels scary right now.
Encouragement
Your words can build a teammate up — use them.
- What's the best thing someone said to you on the court?
- How do you encourage a teammate who just made a mistake?
- Who needs encouragement from you this week?
Prayer: Thank God for the people who encourage us.
Gratitude
Thankful people are better teammates — notice the good and say so.
- What are you thankful for from this season?
- Who should you thank before the season ends?
- How does gratitude change the way you play?
Prayer: Give thanks for the season, the coaches, the families, and each player.
