Basketball camps fall into a few distinct formats, and the labels get used loosely. A day camp runs a set number of hours over several consecutive days and is where most youth players start. A skills clinic is shorter and narrower — often a single session on one skill, sometimes weekly across a term. An overnight or residential camp houses players on site, usually at a college, and costs meaningfully more because room and board are included. Elite, exposure, or ID camps are evaluation events aimed at recruiting rather than development, and are typically invitation-only.
The single most useful question to ask an organizer is the coach-to-player ratio. A camp that puts 40 players on two courts with three coaches is supervised recreation, whatever the branding says. Ask how the day splits between instruction and live play, and whether players are grouped by age or by ability — grouping by ability is harder to run and much better for development.
